Hanging in there...

My apologies to anyone who has been checking the page this past week, as I really had wanted to update everyone on Labour Day weekend – our party and the WEBN fireworks.  I have been sick since last Monday (just actually started to feel a bit better yesterday and today) and since I didn’t do any school work on the weekend, that put me a bit behind for the rest of the week. Anyways, our party last weekend (Saturday) was what I want to almost say was a disaster, at least that’s how I felt. We had the tent with DJ equipment set-up outside, along with our newly made dance floor and newly painted outdoor table and chair set (thank you to Grandma, Kaitlin and Kim for painting them for us!). Around 5:30pm the really dark clouds began to roll in and before long it was a torrential downpour. The downpour lasted a couple of hours and then it lightened up a bit and rained the rest of the evening, which meant the party was brought inside. Something about having 30 some people in the house that just wasn’t any fun for me.  The best part of the night for me, besides getting to see everyone who came (which I truly appreciated! I was extremely happy so many people did come), was a couple of the nice surprises I got that night.  First, Carrie surprised me with a couple of cupcakes from Gigi’s Cupcakes – Birthday Cake and Kentucky Bourbon Pie. I have been saying for a couple of months now that I needed to try the Kentucky Bourbon Pie cupcake as it sounded amazing, but was only available on Thursdays and Saturdays, and I was never in that area those days. Next, Casey and Izzy surprised me a giant American flag cookie – which tasted sooo good! I had some pretty nice blue teeth and gums from the icing that night.
Sunday was the WEBN fireworks in Newport, which are the largest fireworks display in the Midwest. Each year the ADG Fraternity hosts a tailgating event in a nearby parking lot where there is a lot of food and drinking, some play card games, bean bag toss or beer pong, and others just socialize. Tailgating for the event started early that morning, but by the time we got up and organized, it was about 4pm when we got there. Compared to last year, we had a lot better turnout, and the weather was more in our favour this year. Last year it rained on and off for of the day, and just before the fireworks were to start, it really started to rain. Not the case this year, got to enjoy a fantastic show.
As I said before, I woke up Monday not feeling well, so didn’t do a whole lot. We went for lunch with Kelsi and Seymur before they headed back to Indianapolis and then we just went home and watched hours of How I Met Your Mother.

The rest of the week was fairly uneventful, had class Tuesday night, and had a long day at the school Wednesday. Thursday I dropped Aaron off at work, went to the Chiropractor and over to the school for the first Outdoor Adventure Club meeting. There are a few events planned in the next couple of months (rock climbing, camping trip) but unfortunately I am not able to attend due to other commitments. Thursday night I watched Aaron and the guys play ball, and they lost, so they are out of playoffs now. Then we went to Applebee’s by Thomas More for the 2nd last Rush event for the Fraternity. I’d try to explain exactly what Rush is, but I don’t really know how to, other than saying that there were 4 events planned last week where guys from the school could come out and talk with ADG Alumni and current actives about the fraternity and determine if it was something they were interested in and would potentially want to join. Essentially it was a way for everyone to meet and gauge the interest and potential of each person who came, and you just got to meet new people. It was a pretty good time, there were over 20 of us there, 8 of those were newbies who were wanting to know more about the fraternity and 3 of the guys from the Chapter out of Louisville came up as well. One of the guys I spoke a lot with is a hockey player, and turns out that the Cincinnati Cyclones had wanted him to come up and play with them, but he decided on going to school. And, the other guy I spoke a lot with is a good ol’ farm boy from the middle of nowhere Kentucky. Those are my words, as I’m not sure exactly where it is he’s from, other then he said it’s a couple hours south of Louisville (which is just over an hour south of us) and that there wasn’t a whole lot of stuff around him. Both are really great kids.
Friday at lunch was the first Business Society meeting – which was pretty good. Lunch was provided and they talked about Habitat for Humanity, HONK and Toys for Tots. For Habitat for Humanity they need a minimum of 35 people to go, and of those, 25 people would go to Florida, and the other 10 would go to Mississippi. For HONK, everyone who can, meets on the 3rd Saturday of each month and then go help rebuild and reconstruct homes in the Newport and Covington Areas, which are close to where I live. And Toys for Tots, sounds similar to our Santa’s Anonymous, toys are gathered and distributed around Christmas to ensure that every kid gets at least one present on Christmas morning. I’m not sure what our involvement fully is with that yet, but I am looking forward to it. That night we went for supper with Josh and Stephanie at this new place called BJ’s Brewhouse. It was ok until I found a hair in my pizza and instantly lost my appetite.

Saturday morning I had my Theology class, and I tell you, I feel a lot better about it then I did in the first class two weeks ago. I might not be as confident in it as I maybe should be, but I’m hoping that gets better as the weeks go by. Then I came home and helped Aaron get ready for the ADG Brotherhood Bonfire that was at the house that night. Sunday we went over to Amber and Jason’s for the first cookout (at home we’d call it a BBQ) for the kickoff of the NFL season, and the Bengals were playing at 1pm. I felt really left out that day, only person not wearing something related to the Bengals. I’ll have to do better for the next one! That night Aaron and I both did some reading for my Economics class as I had to submit 2 papers before my class last night. I was able to bounce some of my thoughts off him, just to make sure I was on the right track. He loves Economics, as for me, I’m not the biggest fan, even more so that I have to re-take the class as my marks weren’t high enough to transfer them from Red River.
I’m not sure what it was about Sunday night, probably the fact that I was really tired, but when Aaron was telling me about something in my book and where it was that he had read to, he said “I dog eared the page” and I instantly started laughing, and of course he looked at me funny, and I just kept laughing and said “what did you just say?! Dog eared?!” and he started laughing at me cause I was laughing so hard. I’m not sure if I’m the only one who has ever heard that before, but did I ever think it was funny. He asked me what we called it, and I said that it was just called a fold, but from now on I am going to try and remember to say I “dog eared” the page.

Yesterday I had classes and then attended the fraternity’s meeting after class. You might ask why I would have gone to that, but we’re having a chili cook-off on October 26th at the football game. I’m on the committee with a few other fraternity guys doing the planning and organizing, on top of it, I’m making a batch of chili. The whole idea for this cook-off came from the one night I made Aaron chili. I’m glad I was in attendance for the meeting, as I am now signed up to attend training this Thursday night at Paul Brown Stadium, so that I can help work Bengals games and sell beer at the booth.
Aaron’s off on a bachelor party this weekend, so I have the house all to myself. Should be interesting to see how I do all alone. I have plans to meet Carrie on Friday night for dinner and a couple of drinks, then I plan on having a pretty low key weekend at home studying for my first history test which will be on Monday or maybe Wednesday next week. Well, it’s almost time for me to go to class! Later!

PS. I’ll try and post some pictures for this post when I am at home.
